Forests and their importance
Forests play a central role in our lives, much more than we think; when we drink a glass of water, when we write in a notebook or when we build a house,
invisible threads bind us to the forests. Their sustainable management and use of resources, even in fragile ecosystems, are essential to counter climate change and contribute to the prosperity and well-being of the Planet's inhabitants and future generations.
Deforestation is one of the most serious environmental problems of our time. Its impact on the quality of the air we breathe and on our ecosystem is dramatic. To the point of putting at
risk the survival of entire animal species and even humans.
Forests store 55% of the carbon contained in the world's forests. These ecosystems
play a decisive role in regulating the world's climate, generate the so-called "flying rivers" that transport moisture to temperate latitudes and contain the highest concentrations of plant biodiversity in the world (in a single hectare there can be more than 200 different plant species). Current deforestation rates contribute to 10% of the world's Co2 emissions.
Working mainly with paper for 30 years now, we have realized the importance of being able to use
sustainable and certified materials. For these reasons, our company wanted to do something (in its own small way) to contribute to the protection of forests by undertaking the path to
FSC® certification, which stands for Forest Stewardship Council®.
What is the forest stewardship council®?
The Forest Stewardship Council (or
FSC® for short) is an international non-profit NGO. The
FSC® has created an internationally recognized forest certification system. The aim of the certification is the
correct forest management and the traceability of the derived products.
More specifically, the
FSC® was founded in 1993 by the union of some environmental groups (including WWF and Greenpeace) and social groups, forest owners, wood and paper processing industries, researchers, technicians and many other people involved in the supply chain.
The objective of the association is the creation of an alternative to the indiscriminate destruction of forests, through the establishment of a
system of guarantee of the origin of wood and wood products, including cellulose.
Thanks to an international certification process, the
Forest Stewardship Council® guarantees that the raw material used comes only from forests in which strict environmental, social and economic standards are respected, ensuring maximum protection of environmental resources and the rights of local populations.
To date, the
FSC® system is the most accredited forest certification system in the world, with certified holders in 81 countries and more than 180 million hectares of certified forest worldwide.
What does FSC® paper look like?
FSC® papers are not physically different from traditional papers. Apparently identical, they have a very different story to tell, because what distinguishes them is the origin of the cellulose from which they are made.
When you choose an
FSC® paper, you can be sure that no primary forest has been cut down and that no indigenous community or ecosystem balance has been damaged.
